Dental Crowns in Elma, NY

Dental crowns are custom-made, tooth-shaped caps that fit over damaged or decayed teeth, or on top of a dental implant. They are often recommended with a tooth is serverly weakened and a filling cannot properly strengthen the tooth. Sometimes they help hold fractured teeth together or hold a dental bridge in place. Sometimes they can even be used to change the shape of your tooth or close a gap to give you a more esthetic smile.

About Dental Crowns

Dental crowns can be made of either metal, porcelain, or a combination of the two. The majority of our crowns are made of porcelain, as modern porcelain materials have shown to be just as strong as metal and are usually more life-like. While we expect a well-made crown to last a minimum of 7 years, with good home care they often last much longer. We’ve seen a number of crowns last up to 40 years!

Preparing for a Dental Crown

Dr. Finney will begin the crown placement process by shaving off a thin layer of the tooth to make room for your dental crown. She will then take a very precise impression of the tooth as well as the teeth nearby and above the tooth being crowned. This impression will be sent to a lab where the lab technician will create a model of your mouth and make the crown to precisely fit your tooth. In the meantime, Dr. Finney will make you a temporary crown so protect your tooth while your impression is at the dental lab.

At your second visit, the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent crown will be checked and adjusted as necessary to make sure it fits perfectly in your mouth. Once it is ready it will be permanently cemented onto your tooth and beautifully restore the natural appearance of your tooth.
